A Spirited Win For Romance Was Born At SOYA

Romance Was Born were awarded the prize in the fashion category for the Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards (SOYA) on Wednesday November 11, celebrating their innovation and creative spirit.

Designers Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales were selected from finalists Gary Bigeni and Arnsdorf to receive a once-in-a-lifetime mentorship opportunity with SOYA09’s inspirational fashion guru's Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, along with financial support in the form of $5,000 in cash and $5,000 in flights from Qantas.

The dynamo duo were thrilled to be acknowledged and say they will be using the cash and flights to pursue overseas growth, "We really want to put the flights and money towards doing a showing in London sometime next year. It's something we have always wanted to do when the timing was right!"

SOYA is a part of Qantas’ ‘Sharing the Spirit’ community initiative, which aims to help young Australians connect with their dreams, and achieve their potential. Romance Was Born's award was announced at a presentation at the MCA where finalists, mentors, media and the who’s who of Sydney’s artistic world came together to view an exhibition of the finalists’ work and celebrate the best new creative and cultural talent Australia has to offer. The high calibre of this year’s finalists demonstrates the unique ability of SOYA to showcase some of Australia’s best artists, musicians, designers and filmmakers.

Since the inception of the Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards in 2004, SOYA has been instrumental in fostering the careers of Australia’s top innovative and inspiring young talent in the arts including fashion talents from the Little Hero stable the past two years: Geoffrey J Finch of cult womenswear label Antipodium in 2008 and Ben Pollitt of Friedrich Gray in 2007. We love a hat trick!

Gig pick of the week

This week's Little Hero excursion took us to the intimate surrounds of The Coachman Russian restaurant in Surry Hills to witness the strikingly distinguished and increasingly prominent Kirin J. Callinan record his debut solo album live.

Having played with The Lost Valentinos, Mercy Arms, Fashion Launches Rocket Launches and Jack Ladder, Kirin is what you might call an adaptable artist. Pushing the boundaries of traditional instrumentation through his use of effect pedals and sound in general, he really lived up to his trademark statement: "offer me a gig, I'll give you a performance".

Beautiful, stirring and undeniable - Little Hero's gig pick of the week.

Pop Crimes

Rowland S. Howard, the legend of Australian rock whose distinctive style and sound has resonated across the underground rock landscape for decades, played a special performance at Sydney's Oxford Arts Factory last night celebrating the release of his new album Pop Crimes.

Overpowering and soaked in a fantastic nonchalant attitude, his songs brought together his own unique brand of stripped down music, and we loved it!

Check out his new album Pop Crimes, out now via Liberation.

SixThousand - The Antipodium Edit

A big congratulations to Fenella Peacock from Antipodium on guest editing the latest issue of SixThousand!

Grab a bottle, scramble into that empty front row seat, and see the Perth world through Antipodium-coloured glasses. It's bubbly, savvy, tasteful, and we're proud as a Peacock of it.

Cate Blanchett loves Romance Was Born

Esteemed Romance Was Born ambassador Cate Blanchett (or as she's now been dubbed, Cate Blankett) shook things up at the opening of Screen Worlds at the ACMI in Melbourne as she stepped out in Romance Was Born couture.

The one-shoulder crochet Blanket Dress was showcased earlier this year at Cate's beloved Sydney Theatre Company as part of Romance Was Born's spring/summer collection Doilies and Pearls, Oyster and Shells.

Personally requested by Cate, we give her a big thumbs up for turning heads and continuing to support Australian fashion.

ANT!PODiUM's NO ROMANCE

Heavenly angels flocked from afar to experience the maximum pleasure and powerful vibrations of Antipodium's magical club night sensation NO ROMANCE held last week at London's new favourite boozer The Stag's Head.

Throwing back No-Ro’s (a pink and sour cocktail garnished with rose petals, served only by the jug), and decked out in her new season wares, was actress and Antipodium fan Emma Booth dancing the night away to the tasty tunes of The Voguettes (the British Vogue fashion team), and Matt Van She who sent everyone's heart a flutter.

Also spotted were The Gossip and Chromeo's new label mates teenagersintokyo who celebrated wrapping up their latest record, Vogue Russia's It girl Margaret Crow and designer Jens Laugesen.

The Life of Dreams

My discovery for this week is the excellent Julie Doiron - the most unique voice I've heard since early Cat Power aka Chan Marshall this one's on high rotation...

Happy, positive, excited, rocking. Everything is coming together in Canadian songstress Julie Doiron's world, from embracing her electric past with Eric's Trip, to embarking on a new and energetic phase of her solo life with some of the most upbeat and inspiring songs of her recording career with 'I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day.'

"Every day, every night I tell myself in this beautiful light that I'm glad to be alive."
